Kunchar Asthula
Superb catch, Thomas! Larvae of mayflies live more than a year-long but adults barely a day. Males do not even have a mouth to feed with so they die within hours. F/L.
Thomas Young replied:
Thank you Kunchar. Some mayflies such as this one may live more than one year under the water and go through many instars, shedding as it grows similar to a snake. The larger mayflies such as this one and the Hexagenia limbata live for 3 years as nymphs and can live for more tha3 days when adults. And yes you are correct as they have no mouth to feed with. Very cool and interesting insects and that is what has drawn me to study and photograph them.

Thank you to a buyer from Wanaka, Otago - New Zealand. As an outdoorsman and flyfisher i was intrigued by the insects that trout ate and the beauty of the surroundings trout we found at. This was the beginning of my journey into film and photography capturing and observing all that was around me and presenting it in an artful and informative way.
